Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture, molten salt power plants and artificial photosynthesis .
I.R.O.A.F is the single window entity of Indian Railways for dealing with alternate source of renewable energy one of which is Solar Energy.
WORK IN THE FIELD OF SOLAR ENERGY
o Provision of Guard Comfort Kits (Solar Energy System) comprising of Light, Fan and Charging Point on Guard Vans of Goods Trains.
Ø This has been done on 50 Guard Vans. First ever effort since inception of train service in 1853 in India.
o Use of Solar Panels on roof top of DEMU Passenger Trains.
Ø A Pilot project successfully completed on six Passenger coaches of DEMU Train and introduced in Passenger service in Delhi sub-urban area. First ever in the World in Train sets.
o Setting up roof top PV solar generation in workshops/Production Units.
Ø Projects initiated for 26 Railway Workshops / Production Units. Contract finalised for three Railway Workshops (at Parel, Kota and Bhavnagar workshops) and one Production Unit (Diesel Modernisation Works, Patiala).
o Setting up roof top PV solar generation on Railway Stations.
Ø Contract finalised for three Railway Stations (at Amritsar, Pathankot and Jalandhar Stations).
