Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has the same usage as CNG but it offers more energy density and is more purer than CNG. This means that more trip distance can be covered with the same fuel space on a transport vehicle. Due to this it offers a good alternative for use as fuel on locomotives and other transport applications.
IROAF, Indian Railways has embarked on a project for use of LNG in the railways system in the following areas:
i) Industrial application.
ii) Diesel Powered Car (DPC) used in DEMUs.
iii) For main line locomotives such as ALCO, EMD and gas turbine locomotives.
A MoU has been signed with M/s. Indian Oil Corporation for the following areas of implementation:
1st Phase – Use of LNG for industrial applications as well as for DEMUs at identified locations:
i. Natural Gas through LCNG (CNG from LNG without compressor).
ii. Natural Gas at 3.0 bar or at required pressure through LNG on-board
2nd Phase – LNG on-board enabling Indian Railways to adopt technologies like HPDI,etc. for higher substitution of Diesel for main line engines and shunting engines. Natural Gas through LCNG (CNG from LNG without compressor).Natural Gas at 3.0 bar or at required pressure through LNG on-board
